Adjusting to a New Prosthesis: Common Challenges and How to Overcome Them
April 13, 2026
Getting a new prosthesis is the start of getting back to doing the things you love and gaining more independence. But let’s be honest: it’s not always easy. Adjusting takes time, patience, and the right people to help guide you through it.
At Atlantic Prosthetic Services, we’ve been helping patients across Southeastern North Carolina for over 27 years. Whether you’re walking again for the first time after an amputation or upgrading to a new device, we’re here to make the process as smooth and supportive as possible.
The Emotional Side of the Journey
Adapting to a new prosthesis isn’t just about learning how to walk again — it’s also about how you feel while doing it. There will be good days and tough days. Some moments you’ll feel proud of your progress, and others might be frustrating. That’s completely normal and part of the process.
Here are a few things that can make it easier:
- Give yourself time. No one masters it overnight. Every small bit of progress is worth celebrating.
- Talk it out. Lean on your family, friends, or care team when things feel overwhelming.
- Connect with others who’ve been there. Talking with people who’ve gone through the same process can be incredibly encouraging.
We’ve seen firsthand how emotional recovery is just as important as physical recovery. Our team knows when to encourage, when to adjust, and when to simply listen because your mindset matters just as much as your mobility.
Getting Physically Comfortable
It’s normal for your body to need time to adjust to your prosthesis. In the early days, you might feel sore, notice some pressure points, or find your balance feels off. A comfortable, precise fit makes all the difference, and that’s why we make nearly all of our devices right here in our Wilmington lab.
Some things that come up pretty often:
- Fit problems. If the socket feels too tight or too loose, speak up. Don't try to push through it. Even small fit issues can turn into irritation or worse if you ignore them.
- Skin sensitivity. Your limb is dealing with contact and pressure in places it's not used to. Keeping things clean and checking your skin every day helps catch problems early.
- Balance and posture. Your muscles have to figure out how to support you differently now, and that takes a bit of time.
What you can do:
- Get adjustments when you need them. We have our lab right here, so we can usually make changes the same day you come in. No waiting around for weeks.
- Make sure you're using your liners and socks correctly. They cushion your limb and help manage how your fit changes through the day as volume shifts.
- Don't skip physical therapy. The stronger and more balanced you are, the better everything feels and the more natural your movement becomes.
Getting Your Movement Back
Once the fit is correct, the next challenge is moving around with confidence. Walking, stairs, and standing for a while, it all feels different at first. It takes some time to figure out, but you get there step by step.
A few things that help:
- Start with the basics. Short walks and balance work are a good place to begin. Don't try to do everything at once.
- Stay in contact. We'll tweak your alignment as you go and catch any bad habits before they stick.
- Keep moving. The more you use your prosthesis, the more natural it starts to feel.
We love seeing patients hit their stride. And because we handle everything in our own lab, we can make adjustments as you're progressing. Your prosthesis can improve right along with you.
